No. 14 North Carolina opened its season Sunday with a 45-0 win over Gardner-Webb in Chapel Hill. Freshmen Julian Tagg and Gavin Kane won their first matches at UNC, while No. 1 Austin O’Connor began his season with a win via fall.
The Tar Heels (1-0) started fast against the Runnin’ Bulldogs (0-3), with Tagg winning in his first time in a Carolina singlet, a decision over Austin Wadlow to put Carolina on the board out of the gate.
After the match at 125 pounds, Carolina won the next six matches by either technical fall or via pin. Redshirt sophomore Joe Heilmann and redshirt junior Zach Sherman both scored 21 points at 133 and 141 pounds respectively, setting up No. 1 Austin O’Connor to wrestle in his first match of his redshirt jun
